Urban myths say that La Crosse, Wis., was named after colonizers who saw Ho-Chunk people playing lacrosse in the valleys of the bluffs. The town is gaining traction as a Midwest hub for unique sports of all types.

“Like Simon ‘Boots’ Riley from ‘Call of Duty’ would say: Choices have consequences,” Gray said. “But, to have a little freedom to swing around, it is good. It brings me back to humble beginnings.”
